These NELAart Micro-grant evenings can be found across the country. Some focus on art, some on ecology, some on local politics. What they all have in common is collective support. Groups get together, choose the project they like best, and offer the grant of the admission to their choice. Each individual only supplies a little bit of money, but collectively they offer support in a way they could not do alone.
NELAart supports our artists this way. The events have an atmosphere of shared purpose with neighbors. The food is a small part of the pleasure of the evening. Often people discover common interests, and sometimes artists who did not win the grant have found valuable connections and help. A little food, a shared interest, unusual art to see, and the satisfaction of knowing that by working together they have helped an artist move a little further ahead with their work.
The York is a popular restaurant and bar in Highland Park and will be offering NELAart Patrons soup, one vegetarian, one not, along with their ballot. Patrons who wish, may buy other food and drink.
