Cardio ActivitiesArticle Directory

Article Focus: Cardio
If you've considered taking up a more active lifestyle, you've most definitely heard of "cardio activities". Cardio plays an important role in many fitness routines, and performing cardio exercise is a great way to keep your heart and body healthy. The best thing about cardio activities is that people at all fitness levels can perform them.

Aerobic or cardiovascular exercise is defined as any type of physical exercise, performed at moderate but increasing levels of intensity, over extended periods of time. The word "aerobic" means "with oxygen"; therefore, aerobic exercise refers to the body's use of oxygen throughout the activity. Cardio exercises are aimed at increasing your heart rate, and can help you to effectively burn calories.

Most people immediately think of weight loss when considering cardio activities. While it is true that cardio and aerobic exercise will increase metabolism, and result in a loss of fat mass, there are other very important health benefits to consider. Taking part in cardio activities goes way beyond the average weight loss program.

Cardio activities and aerobic exercise can help to:

1. Tone muscles throughout the body, resulting in improved blood circulation and reduced blood pressure

2. Strengthen cardiovascular muscles to increase the pumping efficiency of the heart

3. Strengthen respiratory muscles to promote smoother, unlabored breathing

4. Increase the number of red blood cells, resulting in improved transport of oxygen throughout the body

Regular and disciplined aerobic exercise can help to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Taking part in an active cardio exercise program also helps lower the risk of other health problems including respiratory disease and osteoporosis.

Cardio activities are not limited to members of expensive fitness clubs. Some of the most common cardio exercises are:

1. Walking: This is one [see also buy used clothes ] cardio activity that you're already doing, everyday! Walking is a very beneficial, low-impact exercise that can be done virtually everywhere. It is one [see also buy used clothes ] of a few aerobics exercises that can be incorporated into any type of lifestyle, and best of all it's free! A 15-30 minute walk around the mall will allow your body to lose as many calories as you would on a treadmill. You can increase your caloric and fat loss by increasing the pace and rhythm of your walks.

2. Running and Jogging: Like walking, jogging and running can be done in many places. Plan a route through your neighbourhood, run around the park, jog along the boardwalk at the beach, or take to a track. Running and jogging are accessible, easy and free cardio activities. Before you begin, make sure that you're body is ready. Beginners should begin with [see also thrift stores ] speed walking, and then gradually work up to a jogging or running routine. Running is a very natural activity for your body and you can easily work it into your regular exercise routine.

3. Aerobic Dancing: In the 1970's there was an explosion in aerobic activity through the Jazzercise program. The 1980s brought exercise gurus like Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons into the spotlight, and even brought exercise attire like headbands and legwarmers to the fashion runways. In the 1990s, aerobics lessons were led by supermodels and sold everywhere on video. The new millennium brought cardio activities like pilates and yoga. Over the past thirty decades aerobics dance exercises may have [see also cheap vintage clothing ] changed, but the excitement has not faded. People still love to work out to a hot beat, and aerobic dance moves are fun and effective ways to keep weight off and maintain a trim, toned body.

Contrary to what many people believe, aerobic exercise is not limited to the uber-healthy. There are a variety of aerobic dance lesson styles to appeal to people of all fitness levels:

* Low-impact: In low-impact aerobics, the dancer always keeps one [see also buy used clothes ] foot on the ground. There are no bouncing or jumping movements that can cause joint pain. Low-impact aerobic exercise is ideal for people just starting out, for older people, and for those who cannot or should not move or jump around excessively.

* High-impact: There is a great deal of jumping and complicated body movements in high-impact aerobics. For this [see also second hand stores ] reason, those with [see also thrift stores ] a little experience and a certain amount of agility and rhythm best perform these cardio activities.

* Water aerobics: Cardio exercises done in the water are known as water aerobics. These are low-impact activities that are usually performed in waist-deep water, so some swimming ability is required.

* Step aerobics: In step aerobics, a raised platform is used with [see also thrift stores ] a combination of body movements. "Stepping" movements are often used in both low and high-impact aerobics routines.

Cardio activities are good for maintaining a healthy weight, and essential in keeping a healthy heart. Consider making regular cardio exercise part of your daily routine.

Congress to miss midnight cliff deadline

America is going over the ?fiscal cliff? ? for a few minutes, or hours, at the very least. Don't panic. There's no need to move the family into the Doomsday bunker in the backyard. Yet.

While President Barack Obama and Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have said they are close to a broad agreement that would prevent across-the-board income-tax hikes, lawmakers are unlikely to approve actual legislation before a midnight deadline.

That?s not expected to pose any major logistical problem in the next few days, provided that Democrats and Republicans actually have a deal. Unlike a college student who writes an end-of-semester paper overnight before a morning deadline, then drops the assignment off hours after it was due, Congress can write its own rules to minimize the damage ? and Americans whose taxes are staying the same won?t see a change in their bottom line.

?It?s basically a matter of saying it?s effective January 1,? one senior Republican aide shrugged.

The deal ? if a final deal is reached ? will originate in the Democratic-led Senate (but on a House bill, since legislation affecting revenues technically has to start in the lower chamber). Republican House Speaker John Boehner has said that the House will only act after the Senate does. Obama and McConnell have both said that they expected work to continue on avoiding the first installment in $1.2 trillion in cuts to domestic and defense programs, the other part of the "fiscal cliff." McConnell called earlier in the day for lawmakers to vote on the tax component now, but Democrats demurred.

As of 5 p.m. on Monday, it was not clear whether the Senate would vote before midnight.

Pakistani Taliban execute 21 captured paramilitary men

PESHAWAR Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistani Taliban militants have executed 21 paramilitary force men who were captured in attacks on their posts late last week, government officials said on Sunday.

The men, who were kidnapped on Friday in attacks on three checkpoints near the city of Peshawar, were lined up before being shot one-by-one, officials said.

"They were tied up and blindfolded," Naveed Anwar, a senior administration official in the Khyber region, said by telephone.

One man was badly wounded but survived, Anwar said, adding that the 21 bodies had been found after local tribesmen notified security services.

"They were lined up and shot in the head," said Habibullah Arif, another local official. He said the wounded man and another man had managed to escape.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility and pledged to carry out further attacks on Pakistani security forces.

"We killed all the kidnapped men after a council of senior clerics gave a verdict for their execution. We didn't make any demand for their release because we don't spare any prisoners who are caught during fighting," said Ihsanullah Ihsan.

The men were from a paramilitary force recruited from members of ethnic Pashtun tribes in northwestern Pakistan. The militias support the government in its efforts against Islamist militants battling the state.

The killing of the men followed two high-profile attacks in Peshawar this month. Suicide bombers attacked Peshawar's airport on December 15 and a bomb killed a senior Pashtun nationalist politician and eight other people at a rally on December 22.

The violence underscores the Taliban's ability to carry out high-profile attacks in major cities even as the amount of territory they control has shrunk over the past three years.

California Democrats signal they want to reform Proposition 13

SACRAMENTO -- The third rail of California politics may not be as deadly as once thought.

Three and a half decades after the passage of Proposition 13 shook the political landscape in California and sparked a taxpayer revolt across America, voters appear to be warming up to the idea of reforming the initiative as long as protections for homeowners stay intact.

And the apparent sea change in public attitudes, combined with the two-thirds majorities Democrats now hold in both chambers of the Legislature, has emboldened some politicians to take aim at the iconic measure.

"It is time for a fix, because Proposition 13 is broken," said Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, who plans to introduce a bill next year aimed at forcing businesses to pay higher property taxes.

The landmark 1978 measure rolled back property taxes and capped yearly increases until a property is sold, but critics say one of its unintended consequences was shifting more of the Golden State's property tax burden from businesses to homeowners.

In addition to Ammiano's bill, two constitutional amendments heading to the Legislature would allow voters to approve local parcel taxes for schools and libraries on a 55 percent vote, rather than the 66.7 percent now required.

In a recent poll by the Public Policy Institute of California, 58 percent of registered voters said they favored a "split roll" property tax, in which commercial properties would be

reassessed annually or semiannually according to their market value, while taxes on residential properties would continue to be capped at 2 percent annual increases. And since Democrats took full control of the Legislature in last month's election, some legislators have suggested that it's time for a so-called "split roll."

Proposition 13 has held a central place in California's political discourse since voters approved it with nearly 65 percent of the vote in June 1978. It's credited with fomenting the rise of the anti-government, anti-tax movement that swept Ronald Reagan into the White House.

"It really has symbolized an unwillingness to permit Sacramento to raise general taxes," said Max Neiman, a fellow at UC Berkeley's Institute for the Study of Government. "It's suggested a kind of decline from the time California was a leader in an array of public services."

But voters in the Golden State now seem to have a "nuanced understanding that we simply aren't going to cut our way out of the fiscal deficit, and some kind of tax increases will have to take place," Neiman said. He pointed to the passage of Gov. Jerry Brown's tax measure, Proposition 30, as evidence that voters believe more revenues are needed, especially if they come largely from the wealthy.

A ballot box battle over amending Proposition 13, however, won't happen before November 2014. And it may come even later since Brown probably isn't eager to share the ballot with an issue that could blow up in his face if, as is expected, he runs for re-election.

Still, two Democratic lawmakers, Sens. Lois Wolk, D-Davis, and Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, next year will try to lower the Proposition 13 threshold for parcel taxes -- a move that would need voter approval. Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, called it a "sound idea" to give local governments the ability to "affect their own destiny," he said. "I think the public will get behind 55 percent."

The threshold for passing local school bonds is already 55 percent.

Steinberg, however, has balked at rushing through the constitutional amendments. And he said it's not yet time to take on an overhaul of Proposition 13 by creating a split-roll tax.

But Ammiano plans to introduce legislation early next year to close a loophole that allows corporations to sidestep reassessments on properties they purchase.

Ownership of a property isn't considered transferred unless 50 percent or more is sold. Critics say corporations find ingenious ways to avoid triggering reassessments.

In one of many similar cases, the wine company E&J Gallo averted a higher reassessment 10 years ago after buying the prime 1,765-acre Louis M. Martini vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, when 12 Gallo family members bought individual shares -- none greater than 50 percent. The move costs Napa County as much as $700,000 a year in taxes.

"Why should these multibillion-dollar corporations get these breaks at the expense of regular folks?" Ammiano asked.

Ammiano said he hopes the Legislature will act on his bill before the end of spring. It would not require voter approval because it would only be a statutory change.

But it's expected to kick up a firestorm of opposition from businesses.

"You'll see them feeling like they're targeted. And when that happens, you'll see them stand up and fight," said Allan Zaremberg, president and CEO of the California Chamber of Commerce.

A key finding in the PPIC poll that should give Democrats pause is that 60 percent of voters still support Proposition 13, said Kris Vosburgh, executive director of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, a group founded by the measure's co-author.

"Proposition 13 is more popular today than when it passed," Vosburgh said. "We are definitely for enforcement when we know there are documented cases of efforts to get around legitimate change of ownership. But we don't see it as an overall problem. It's all about the state trying to get more money."

Larry Stone, Santa Clara County's assessor, said even if voters approve a split roll, county assessors won't be able to carry it out without vastly expanding their staffs.

"I don't have the staff or skill set to reassess all business, commercial and industrial property every two or three years," Stone said.

Simply raising the tax rate above the base 1 percent for commercial properties would be an easier way to get more revenues, though "it doesn't avoid the inequities of Proposition 13," Stone said. "You couldn't devise a more unfair property tax system if you tried than the one we have in California."

The turning point for reformers could come when homeowners begin to realize they're carrying most of the load for property taxes, proponents say. In 55 of 58 counties, residential homeowners are paying more property taxes than businesses, after businesses had taken up much of the burden before Proposition 13, according to a study compiled by Lenny Goldberg, president of the California Tax Reform Association.

In Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties, just before the passage of Proposition 13 in 1978, residential homes and all other properties shared the tax burden evenly -- 50-50. But now homeowners are responsible for 70 percent of their counties' assessed value, the study said.

"Nobody can defend the way we assess commercial property," said Goldberg, who is working with Democrats on Proposition 13 changes. "Commercial property is the biggest hole in our tax system, and we avert our eyes at the hole in the middle of the system because it's not politic to discuss this."

Facts about PROPOSITION 13
Approved in June 1978 with 64.8 percent of the vote.
What it did: Rolled back property values for tax purposes to 1975-76 levels and created a base tax rate of 1 percent, with annual tax increases limited to the inflation rate or 2 percent, whichever is lower. When a property is sold, it is reassessed based on the selling price.
Declared constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1992.
Other requirements: A two-thirds majority of the Legislature must approve all new taxes. A two-thirds vote is also required if local governments want to raise a tax for a specific purpose.
Past changes: Voters have approved four measures to amend Proposition 13, most strengthening it. In November 1978, Proposition 8 permitted a reassessment of property values in the wake of a disaster or a declining market; Proposition 60 in 1986 allowed homeowners 55 and older to transfer the assessed value of their present home to a replacement home; Proposition 39 in 2000 lowered the required supermajority necessary for voters to pass school bonds from two-thirds to 55 percent; and Proposition 218, in 1996, gave the people the right to vote on all local taxes and required taxpayer approval of assessments and property-related fees.

Florida State (11-2) vs. NIU (12-1)
Jan. 1, 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)

BOWL PREVIEW HUB | BOWL FAQ HUB

There's always plenty of action down on South Beach around New Year's. This January, there will also be plenty of MACtion: Northern Illinois became the first MAC team to reach a BCS game, crashing the Orange Bowl to take on heavily favored Florida State. But instead of toasting the visitors, everyone from television executives (under their breath) to TV commentators (out loud) has questioned NIU's inclusion in the game.

Consider The Herbstreit Referendum this game's ultimate storyline after ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit lambasted the Huskies on ESPN's bowl selection show. Was he stumping for his angry pal, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops? Or are the Huskies really feeble foils for the Seminoles? If there's one thing Florida State has done consistently this past decade, it's play down to its opponents and deliver unthinkable clunker losses. (This season's loss to NC State being the latest example.) Will quarterback Jordan Lynch and the Huskies deliver enough MACtion to get an equal or opposite reaction from Herbstreit and the other doubters?

Points of interest

1. Ending the drought: It's hard to believe, but Florida State hasn't won a BCS game since the 1999 season, when it beat Virginia Tech in the second BCS championship game. Before apathy and atrophy overtook the program at the end of Bobby Bowden's tenure, FSU was a regular in the top-tier bowl games, appearing in nine straight from 1992-2000. But the Seminoles haven't appeared in a game of this magnitude since 2005, an inexcusable drought for an allegedly elite program. A loss to Northern Illinois would be a giant step back for a program that can't seem to get out of its own way.

BCS simulations: EA Sports predicts narrow FSU win

Senior quarterback EJ Manuel, who has bridged the gap between the Bowden and Jimbo Fisher eras, said the Orange Bowl is an important step for the Seminoles. He isn't falling into the Herbstreit trap. "We're not taking these guys lightly," Manuel said of NIU.

2. Ground Jordan: Lynch, NIU's dual-threat quarterback, put up eye-popping numbers all season. He leads the nation in rushing (1,771) and total offense (4,733) and is tied for second in points responsible for (258). Lynch sounded offended when I asked him if he thought NIU could move the ball against FSU. He believes his ability to run will be important. "My legs are important in almost every game," Lynch said. "It keeps defenses honest in what they do."

Those who haven't seen Lynch shouldn't expect a frantic scrambler. He's a quarterback who doubles as a power back. "He's a tailback, he's a downhill runner," former Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit said of Lynch's bruising style.

3. Simple does it: Three different Huskies went out of their way to point out the simplicity of the FSU defense. But as the old clich? goes, the Jimmys and Joes are often more important than the Xs and Os. FSU has three top-tier draft prospects on its defensive line, including Bjoern Werner, who led the ACC with 13 sacks and 18 tackles for loss this season. Werner projects as a top 10 pick in April's draft.

PAULINE: NFL draft prospects to watch in Orange Bowl

Northern Illinois doesn't expect anything too fancy from the schematically vanilla Seminoles. "They're physically gifted and they know it and will play you straight and say, 'We're better than you,'" said NIU offensive lineman Matt Krempel. On New Year's Day, we'll see if they are right.

Burning question

Can Lynch play with the big boys? Lynch has only been a starter for a year. His body of work, including a 12-game winning streak and a bushel of broken records, can't be questioned. But the quality of the opponent is about to take a drastic up-tick. Lynch will have to make quicker decisions, as FSU's team speed will close running lanes quicker and put pressure on Lynch that he hasn't yet experienced. A strong performance here, though, and Lynch should enter next season as a top-five Heisman candidate.

X-factor

NIU's aerial assault: The FSU game plan seems obvious: stack the box to slow down Lynch and make him beat the Seminoles over the top. Lynch knows this and likes it. "If they try taking me away and stacking the box we have Martel Moore and Tommylee (Lewis) on the outsides, and their speed can match up with Florida State's speed," Lynch said. "Keeping them one-on-one is a great matchup for us." Cubit's Western Michigan team played NIU this year, and the coach said Lynch's arm strength was what surprised him in live action. If Moore and Lewis can find space in man coverage, Lynch will need to get them the ball.

Statistically speaking

18: NIU ranks No. 18 nationally in scoring defense, allowing 19 points per game. That's an impressive number considering how frequently the Huskies score, a rate that gives their opponents numerous opportunities of their own. The Huskies play a four-man front and pride themselves on getting pressure without blitzing. That front will face a stiff challenge attempting to contain the mobile and dangerous Manuel.

Final analysis

Florida State has been so consistently inconsistent, especially under bright lights, that it's hard to be too optimistic about the 'Noles. But the reality is that they're exponentially more talented than the Huskies. Best not to overthink this one and simply watch superior athletes dominate, especially in the trenches.

The pick

Florida State 31, NIU 11

Mom Seeks Police Help Finding Woman in Suspected Cancer Scam

Thomas Doty, 20, shown in this undated photo, lost his battle with a rare form of bone cancer called Osteosarcoma on Dec. 19, 2012. (Facebook)

Thomas Doty, 20, shown in this undated photo, lost his battle with a rare form of bone cancer called Osteosarcoma on Dec. 19, 2012. (Facebook)

A mother says she will ask police to find the woman who she believes scammed her dying son.

Thomas Doty, 20, of Washington state, died on Dec. 19 after a three-year battle with bone cancer ? but not before a?woman apparently scammed him and his family?into believing a check for $250,000 was on the way.

Family friend Jonathan Hillstrand, star of the show ?Deadliest Catch,? made a video asking for support for Doty. A woman claiming to be a nurse in Indiana soon promised $250,000 to send him to San Diego, pay for experimental cancer treatments, and help the family save their house after the expense of caring for their son.

?This huge yellow bouquet of flowers showed up, [with a note] saying, ?No more worries,?? Tiffany Doty, Thomas?s mother, told ABC News. ?She sent me a text and an email, and it all started, saying, ?I saw your story, and my heart breaks, and I?m going to pay for all this treatment.??

Tiffany Doty says the?woman scammed her family for weeks?? always coming up with an excuse and phony proof that she had already sent the money, including snapshots of bank statements ? as they planned and eventually took Thomas to San Diego, planning to receive treatments.

?She was always out of town or out of the country, so it was always difficult for her to get things done, and then we sent the wire info, and that didn?t happen because she got one number wrong, and it became obvious after a couple weeks that this is not happening,? Tiffany Doty said. ?That?s when, my sister just called the local news here ? and that?s when we got a huge outpouring from the public and that was enough to get him down there.?

Thomas Doty flew to San Diego hoping to receive experimental treatments not covered by the family?s insurance, Tiffany Doty said. She blames the woman for lost time in addition to false hopes.

?When we started him down there he was just in a little bit of back pain,? Tiffany Doty says of preparing to take her son to San Diego. ?By the time we got him down there he was on 300 milliliter of morphine a day.?

All the while, Tiffany Doty said she told the woman to let her know if the money wouldn?t come, or if the woman had changed her mind about wanting to send it. Tiffany Doty said she received messages purportedly from the woman?s mother ? messages she now believes were sent by the woman herself.

?She?s never been a nurse anywhere in the United States that we can find. There?s a lot of things that we?ve looked at, a lot of emails we?ve sent,? Tiffany Doty told ABC News. ?Nothing checks out at all, except that she?s shut down her Twitter account, and things like that.?

While Thomas and his family waited for the money, his condition worsened.

?Between the time of getting [to San Diego] and the time she wasted, there was another tumor growing that started out the size of a grape, and when the eight weeks went by it was the size of an orange,? Tiffany Doty said.

Her son, she says, was crushed when they realized the money would never come.

Now, Tiffany Doty will go to police.

?The last thing he wanted is for her to be found and not to be able to hurt anyone else, and so that is my mission,? Tiffyany Doty told ABC.

Her mother, Thomas?s grandmother, has contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Tiffany Doty said.

?She just called to ask questions about the laws, and would they go after her, would they investigate,? she said. ?They indicated that there?s something there to pursue.?

Tiffany Doty says she plans to file a report with the local police. She believes the woman gave a fake name, she said, and that her family was scammed by someone who has been doing the same thing to other people for a long time.

?We are going to file charges,? Tiffany Doty said. ?I?m sure there are cyberstalking laws, fraud. I personally am just wiped out. I am beyond wiped out, but my son wanted her found, and he is not a vindictive person.?

Aside from finding justice, the Doty family is facing immediate financial struggles and is asking the public for help. Through their website, HealThomas.com, they are asking for donations to help them save their home. Both Tiffany and her husband are out of work, she told ABC.

?We were a normal family,? Tiffany Doty said. ?We had great jobs, and two years worth of savings, everything that you need. Our house is going to be auctioned on Jan. 11.?

Israel files indictment against former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman

JERUSALEM?Israel?s Justice Ministry filed its indictment against former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman in a Jerusalem court on Sunday, charging him with breach of trust and fraud in a case that could further harm his political career.

Lieberman is accused of trying to advance the career of a former diplomat after the envoy relayed information to him about a criminal investigation into the former Cabinet minister?s business dealings.

On Dec. 13, the Justice Ministry released a draft indictment to both Lieberman and the press. On Sunday, an amended version of that draft was filed in the Jerusalem Magistrates Court after prosecutors received testimony suggesting he was more deeply involved than previously thought in trying to promote the diplomat.

The actual charges remained unchanged.

Lieberman, who denies any wrongdoing, resigned his Cabinet post earlier this month after he was informed of the pending charges, though he remains a member of parliament. He did not appear in court on Sunday and had no comment on the indictment.

The diplomat he tried to promote, former ambassador to Belarus Zeev Ben-Aryeh, reached a plea bargain with the state in the case earlier this year.

The indictment did not address the main suspicions against Lieberman that were the focus of a years-long investigation. Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein ultimately decided that prosecutors did not have a strong enough case to charge Lieberman with illicitly receiving millions of dollars from businessmen and laundering the cash through straw companies in eastern Europe.

While he was charged with lesser offences, Lieberman?s political future could be compromised if the court that hears the case decides to convict him of a crime that carries what is known in Israeli law as ?moral turpitude.? Lawmakers convicted of such crimes must resign immediately from parliament, then are barred from re-entering politics for seven years.

Lieberman?s Yisrael Beiteinu party is running on a joint list with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s Likud in the Jan. 22 election, and he is expected to be re-elected to parliament. Political commentators had viewed the hookup as grooming him to become a future prime minister. Lieberman takes a hard line on concessions to the Palestinians and perceives Israel?s large Arab minority as a threat to the Jewish state.

In other political news, Israel?s Supreme Court unanimously rejected an election committee?s attempt to disqualify an Arab lawmaker from running for parliament again next month because she took part in a flotilla that tried to breach Israel?s naval blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

The lawmaker, Hanin Zoabi, enraged many Israelis in 2010 by joining the Turkish-led Mavi Marmara flotilla, which was stormed by Israeli naval commandos who clashed with pro-Palestinian activists, killing nine. The Israeli military says the soldiers acted in self-defence after being attacked on the deck.

Zoabi was nearly assaulted in parliament by another lawmaker and subsequently was stripped of some of her parliamentary privileges.

Earlier this month, an Israeli elections committee voted to disqualify her from running in next month?s election. She appealed that decision to the Supreme Court, which overturned it, as it has rejected the committee?s attempts in previous years to bar other Arab candidates from running.

?I welcome the ruling,? Zoabi said. ?I hope this ruling will put an end to the political witch hunt.?

Lawmaker Danny Danon, who collected thousands of signatures demanding that Zoabi?s candidacy be disqualified, accused the court of ?backing the Marmara terrorist rather than naval commando fighters.?

The court said in its ruling that it would release its reason for overturning the decision at a later date. Under Israel?s election law, the court had to issue its ruling by Sunday.

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

SEO will let you increase your rankings on search engines. It depends on the keywords you are using. If you want to attract more visitors to your site, you should create a website with keywords that are popular. The post below can help you come to grips with some of the complexities of SEO through some very useful tips.

Make sure to configure your server to be sensitive to capitalized letters on URLs. If not, your site could be respidered with upper and lower case letters decreasing your link ranking.

Incorporate keywords and phrases into HTML tags to improve your sites SEO. Search engines place more weight on keywords in titles than on words in the main body. Focus on the most relevant keywords.

Any articles that you contribute should always contain backlinks that are associated to your website. This is particularly prudent if your website is targeted at ezines audiences. Many time, these e-zines are archived, meaning that the articles and links are kept active almost indefinitely.

Membership in the Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau will enhance your search engine optimization and increase your credibility. These organizations link to their member businesses, so you can get more local visitors. Also, if you are a part of this Better Business Bureau and have good ratings on their site, your customers will trust you even more.

You have to give keyword density some attention when optimizing pages for the search engines. No more than twenty percent of your content should consist in keywords.

Before selecting a SEO company to support your website, be certain to investigate them thoroughly. Ask solid and direct questions about their results, their success in SEO promotion, their best practices and most importantly, ask how long before you start seeing results. Also ask to see some of their previous work, and see if you can speak with some of their former clients. An upstanding, high quality company will have no problem with this.

If you include a blog on your website, you will show up more often on search engines. The amount of visitors finding you site will be on the rise.

Take advantage of the companies that provide SEO services. These companies will help you get your site a much higher search engine ranking. You can often find great deals on these services.

While pictues make a website look attractive, sites that are looking to improve their search rankings don?t concentrate on images. Only the URL is offered for the search engine index when there is an image link.

An important component of your website is an RSS feed, also known as a Really Simple Syndication feed, that can provide potential buyers with relevant updates. If RSS feeds are updated regularly, they count as fresh content. If you can?t find a suitable feed, create your own. Make sure it has relevant information for your target market. It is also wise to encourage others in subscribing to your RSS feed.

SEO takes time, so be patient. Of course you would love to realize immediate results after doing all that hard work. With millions of websites already online, it will take time for yours to fight its way to the front. You need to stay with it, even if you are not seeing any changes yet. You will reap the reward and climb the ranks in the search engine results over time with hard work and dedication.

Consider advertising products through podcasting. You can include both audio and video content in a podcast, just be sure it is content your users care about. They are growing more and more popular among consumers, and the good news is all they require is a video camera or tape recorder. Doing this will allow the description of your podcast to appear.

All of your links, incoming and internal, should use keywords. ? as your main anchor text. This will help the search engines see your links and additional keywords as being relevant, which will get you higher search rankings. Double check that all of your past content has appropriate keywords in the anchor text also.

Every page in your website needs to be easy to read. If you design a website which is easy to navigate and read, including accessibility options like making the font size larger, you?ll find that your site ranks higher on search engines. This is excellent for both your readers with impairments and disabilities, and your search ranking, as well.

Search engine optimization works by seeking out popular keywords and then applying a mathematical formula to rank the page based on these words. The highest-ranking websites are those whose keyword content closely matches a search term; you can make your website one of them by employing keywords properly. The most effective ways to use keywords are covered in this article.

Obama wants gun violence measures passed in 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Recalling the shooting of 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Barack Obama on Sunday pledged to put his "full weight" behind a legislative package next year aimed at containing gun violence.

In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," Obama voiced skepticism about proposals to place armed guards at schools in the aftermath of the Dec. 14 deadly assault at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

In his boldest terms yet, he vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence and said he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high capacity bullet magazines.

"It is not enough for us to say, 'This is too hard so we're not going to try,'" Obama said. "So what I intend to do is I will call all the stakeholders together. I will meet with Republicans. I will meet with Democrats. I will talk to anybody.

"I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids. And, yes, it's going to be hard."

Obama's comments come as the schoolroom shooting has elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention.

Six adults also died at the school. Authorities say the shooter killed himself and his mother at their home.

The slayings have prompted renewed calls for greater gun controls. The National Rifle Association has resisted those efforts vociferously, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection.

"I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools," Obama said. "And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem."

Obama said he intended to press the issue with the public.

"Will there be resistance? Absolutely there will be resistance," he said.

"The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away. It certainly won't feel like that to me. This is something that - you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it's not something that I want to see repeated."

Besides getting gun violence legislation passed next year, Obama also listed immigration as a top priority for 2013 as well as deficit reduction. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled back plan that avoids across the board tax increases for virtually all Americans.

He issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates for new secretary of defense.

Hagel, who opposed President George W. Bush's decision to go to war with Iraq, has been criticized in conservative circles for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Many liberals and gay activists also have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship

Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision on a secretary of defense but said called Hagel a "patriot."

"He is somebody who has done extraordinary work both in the United States Senate," he said. "Somebody who served this country with valor in Vietnam. And is somebody who's currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job."

He noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark. "And I think it's a testimony to what has been a positive change over the last decade in terms of people's attitudes about gays and lesbians serving our country," Obama said.

Ohio whips ULM 45-14 to win Independence Bowl

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) ? Tyler Tettleton threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns, Beau Blankenship scored four touchdowns, and Ohio cruised to a 45-14 victory over Louisiana-Monroe at the Independence Bowl on Friday.

Chase Cochran caught three passes for 162 yards and a touchdown as the Bobcats (9-4) won their second straight bowl game. Blankenship's four rushing touchdowns set an Independence Bowl record. He added 104 yards rushing.

Tettleton was especially sharp in the first half, completing 9 of 14 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns as Ohio built a 24-7 lead.

Louisiana-Monroe (8-5) struggled in its first bowl game after 19 seasons in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Kolton Browning completed 21 of 39 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw three first-half interceptions.

Ohio broke several Independence Bowl records, including the 31-point margin of victory and 556 total yards.

Ohio lost four of five games to end the regular season ? including the last three ? but looked crisp in a complete performance against the Warhawks.

Tettleton's 2012 season had been a slight disappointment considering the huge numbers he put up the year before as a sophomore, but his performance against Louisiana-Monroe was a reminder of how good he can be. He finished 14 of 22 and averaged more than 23 yards per completion.

Blankenship finished with a school record 1,604 yards rushing yards this season and topped the 100-yard mark for the 10th time. All four of his touchdown runs came from 2 yards out or less.

Louisiana-Monroe came into Friday's game with the better storyline and basically a home-field advantage. The Warhawks were playing in their first bowl game after joining college football's highest level in 1994 and secured a bid in Shreveport, which is only about 100 miles from their campus.

But that emotional lift didn't help ULM's defense, which was torched by Tettleton's deep ball accuracy early and Blankenship's hard running late.

Tettleton needed just three passes to lead Ohio to its first touchdown. He hit Tyler Futrell on a 26-yard gain and Chase Cochran on a 51-yard strike before finding Donte Foster for the 3-yard score.

A few minutes later, Tettleton hit Cochran perfectly in stride for a 68-yard touchdown that gave the Bobcats a 14-0 lead.

Louisiana-Monroe briefly showed some life early in the second quarter when Browning's 14-yard touchdown pass to Tavarese Maye cut the margin to 14-7.

But Ohio came right back, using Matt Weller's 38-yard field goal and Blankenship's 2-yard touchdown run to push ahead 24-7 with 4:50 left in the second quarter. Blankenship's touchdown run was set up by Browning's third interception of the first half.

Louisiana-Monroe had a chance to cut into the deficit just before halftime, but coach Todd Berry's gamble to go for a touchdown instead of a short field goal backfired when Browning's final pass of the half sailed harmlessly out the back of the end zone.

Berry's gamble wasn't a surprise ? the Warhawks had gained a reputation for unorthodox play-calling during their record-setting season. But nothing seemed to work against the Bobcats, and the large ULM fan contingent had mostly disappeared from the stands by the end of the third quarter.

Interstitial Cystitis in Dogs and Cats - Holistic Vet and Pet Nutrition ...

Chronic UTIs can also lead to Interstitial Cystitis.? Interstitial
Cystitis is a condition in which the bladder wall becomes inflamed and
may even hemorrhage. No sooner do you finish a round of antibiotics,
your pet starts showing the common ?signs? of discomfort which can
include frequent urination, straining to urinate, waking up in the
middle of the night to urinate, arching the back, urinating outside the
litter box and/or blood in the urine. Some pets that are normally
housetrained may have accidents or urinate right in front of you because
they can?t hold their urine. Some may develop urinary incontinence on a
regular basis.

With interstitial cystitis, there may be an infection or the ?start of
infection? and sometimes there may be no infection at all. With chronic
UTIs and interstitial cystitis, there may be bleeding in the urine
which can be caused by a variety of factors such as bladder stones,
crystal plugs, kidney disease, stress and/or a congenital defect.
Regardless, your pet?s bladder and urinary system may have a great deal
of inflammation and quite possibly infection which can become very hard
to treat and very uncomfortable for your pet.

Conventional veterinary treatments for interstitial cystitis and chronic urinary tract infections involve the use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Depending upon the other factors that may be involved, your veterinarian may also recommend that your pet be on a special diet that controls the pH of your pet?s urine. Stones, crystals and infections tend to develop depending upon the urinary pH. For example, if your pet?s urine is highly alkaline (pH is 8 or more), there is a possibility that struvite crystals form or that your pet may have urinary tract infection. Having a high urinary pH does not necessarily mean that your pet has an infection. Urinary pH can vary throughout the day as your pet eats, exercises, etc. A normal urinary neutral pH is between 6.5 and 7.0. Consistently high or low urinary pH could be a problem and it is recommended, if possible, that you learn to check your pet?s urine at home using pH testing paper. This will provide valuable information for your veterinarian.

Can holistic care help with interstitial cystitis and chronic urinary tract infections? Absolutely. Holistic care should not be a replacement for conventional veterinary care but rather an extension of it. Holistic care offers you more choices and treatment options to help your pet but it is important to work with your veterinarian to monitor your pet?s progress using laboratory tests and even in-home periodic pH urinary test strips that you do yourself.

Supplements for interstitial cystitis include Notatum, Pet UTI Prevention Formula and Probiotic as well as Akutur.? Click here to learn more about how to treat interstitial cystitis naturally using holistic pet care

Senate's Reid prepares bill with $250,000 tax-hike threshold

Producers of Katie Holmes's Broadway play Dead Accounts, a dark family comedy by Theresa Rebeck, have announced that the show will be closing nearly two months early, wrapping up on January 6 instead of the planned February 24. Obviously the press release about the matter doesn't mention any reasons, but we can assume the show is closing because of poor ticket sales. January is a notoriously difficult frozen tundra for many a Broadway show to traverse, and Dead Accounts just didn't have it. So the cast is being spared the agony of trying. ...

Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie Planning Special Wedding Tattoos?

Truth rating: 1

Angelina Jolie Brad Pitt

(GettyImages)

According to OK!, ?When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finally take the plunge into matrimony this summer they are going to mark the occasion with something even more lasting than jewelry: They plan to get special tattoos.?

?They?re finalizing designs now, but all they?ll say is it will be ?very intimate,?? says a source for the tabloid.

But there?s allegedly a problem.

OK! claims the stars are ?having a hard time agreeing on a design.?

?Angelina loves complicated and deeply thought-out tattoos that only have meaning to her and those closest to her,? explains a mag insider. ?Brad likes something more visual and even suggested they do something a little silly, like a favorite cartoon character.?

Uh-huh.

Oh, but the supposed issues don?t end there!

?They can?t seem to decide what size and on which body part they should add the new decorations,? reports OK!

In other words, the tabloid can?t tell us anything about the alleged wedding tattoos.

It?s appropriate, since OK! recently pretended to have insight into the nuptials themselves ? and whiffed.

Of course, the same publication falsely insisted the couple had secretly married more than a year ago, and wrongly claimed Jolie was pregnant with twins last February.

OK!?s sources have consistently fed the magazine inaccurate information, and when the tab has nothing to say, it comes up with vague, baseless ?reporting? like this piece about Jolie and Pitt?s wedding tattoos.

An actual source close to the situation tells Gossip Cop the ?special tattoos? story is based on ?pure speculation.?

Judge approves Toyota's settlement

4 hrs.

SAN FRANCISCO --?A U.S. judge granted preliminary approval on Friday to Toyota Motor Corp's $1.1 billion settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought by consumers who lost value on their cars due to sudden, unintended acceleration.

U.S. District Judge James Selna in Santa Ana, Calif., scheduled a hearing in June for final approval of the deal, which was announced this week. It provides $500 million in cash for plaintiffs, plus installation of break override systems and a customer support program valued at about $600 million combined.

"Settlement will likely serve the interests of the class members better than litigation," Selna wrote.

Plaintiff lawyer Steve Berman said he was pleased with the favorable comments in Selna's order. Toyota spokeswoman Julie Hamp said the company was gratified by Selna's approval of the settlement, "which will provide value to our customers and provides an extra measure of confidence in their vehicles."

About 16 million Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles sold in the United States spanning the model years 1998 to 2010 are covered by the settlement. Company officials have maintained that the electronic throttle control system was not at fault, instead blaming ill-fitting floor mats and sticky gas pedals.

A study by federal safety officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA found no link between reports of unintended acceleration and Toyota's electronic throttle control system.

Toyota, the No. 3 automaker in the U.S. market, admitted no fault in proposing the settlement, one of the largest U.S. mass class-action litigations in the automotive sector. One plaintiff's law firm called it the largest settlement in U.S. history involving auto defects.

However, the deal does not cover wrongful death or injury lawsuits, believed to total more than 300 according to a Toyota filing in June.

Toyota's recall of its vehicles between 2009 and 2011 relating to the unintended acceleration issue hurt its reputation for reliability and safety.

But the automaker's sales were up almost 29 percent in 2012 through November, compared with a 14 percent increase in the industry, and Toyota's share of the U.S. market has risen to 14.4 percent from 12.7 percent in 2011.

In his order on Friday, Selna said the settlement is fair, given the risks of further litigation and the complicated legal rulings he has issued throughout the case.

"Some of these rulings have been favorable to plaintiffs, some have been favorable to Toyota," Selna wrote. "Were the parties to proceed to a fully litigated result, virtually any outcome would face the risk of uncertainty upon appellate review of these rulings."

Selna also approved up to $200 million in attorneys' fees, saying the amount falls within 25 percent of the total settlement which is the benchmark established by appellate law.

The case is In re: Toyota Motor Corp. Unintended Acceleration Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, U.S. District Court, Central District of California, No. 10-ml-02151.?

SUVs: Big Car And Big Responsibility

SUVs are big and people bought them because of that fact. They wanted big. "It's safer!" they said. "I can see better!" And best of all it will "protect my family in a crash."

Of course for those people who ran over their own children with those SUVs? That's not due to their poor decision making, or life choices, that's the automotive industry's fault.

It's a horrible moment of neglect, but the automotive manufacturers and the public should not be the ones to shoulder the burden, sorry but no. When you choose to buy a bigger-than-needed vehicle then you choose a bigger-than-average risk. That's yours. I never chose to own an SUV, my bumper is all of a foot off the ground. I can see clearly out of my mirrors and the rear view. I also take the time to check, every day, every time I back up. There are lots of small children in my neighborhood, I even stop before I exit my own driveway just to be certain someone doesn't dart out from behind a tree, bush or on a bike.

Nothing replaces caution, no cameras, no beepers, nor warning lights. If you have two kids with you then check that they're buckled in properly before rolling into reverse. Take your time, driving, as we all know, has many dangers and rushing any part of the process isn't something industry could or should cure. That's driver responsibility. It's also something to think about next time you want something you don't really need.

Rover gets set for Martian road trip

Since captivating the world with its acrobatic landing, the Mars rover Curiosity has fallen into a rhythm: Drive, snap pictures, zap at boulders, scoop up dirt. Repeat.

Topping its to-do list in the new year: Set off toward a Martian mountain ? a trek that will take up a good chunk of the year.

The original itinerary called for starting the drive before the Times Square ball drop, but Curiosity lingered longer than planned at a pit stop, delaying the trip.

Curiosity will now head for Mount Sharp in mid-February after it drills into its first rock.

"We'll probably be ready to hit the pedal to the metal and give the keys back to the rover drivers," mission chief scientist John Grotzinger said in a recent interview at his office on the sprawling NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory campus, 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles.

The road trip comes amid great expectations. After all, it's the reason the $2.5 billion mission targeted Gale Crater near the Martian equator. Soaring from the center of the ancient crater is a 3-mile-high (5-kilometer-high) peak with intriguing layers of rocks.

Curiosity's job is to figure out whether the landing site ever had the right environmental conditions to support microbes. Scientists already know water flowed in the past, thanks to the rover's discovery of an old streambed. Besides water, life as we know it also needs energy, typically provided by the sun.

What's missing are the chemical building blocks of life: complex carbon-based molecules. If they're preserved on Mars, scientists figure the best place to hunt for them is at the base of Mount Sharp, where images from space reveal hints of interesting geology.

It's a six-month journey if Curiosity drives nonstop. But since scientists will want to command the six-wheeled rover to rest and examine rocky outcrops along the way, it'll turn into a nine-month odyssey.

Drill, rover, drill
Before Curiosity can tackle a mountain, there's unfinished business to tend to. After spending the holiday taking measurements of the Martian atmosphere, Curiosity gears up for the first task of the new year: Finding the perfect rock to bore into.

The exercise ? from picking a rock to drilling to deciphering its chemical makeup ? is expected to last more than a month.

"We have promised everybody that we're going to go slowly," said Grotzinger, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology.

Curiosity's low-key adventures thus far are in contrast to the drama-filled touchdown that entranced the world in August. Since the car-sized rover was too heavy to land using a parachute and airbags, engineers invented a daring new way that involved lowering it to the surface by cables. The risky arrival proved so successful and popular that NASA is planning an encore in 2020.

Curiosity joined another NASA rover, Opportunity, which has been exploring the Martian southern hemisphere since 2004. Opportunity's twin, Spirit, stopped communicating in 2010.

After nailing the landing, Curiosity fell into a routine. The first month was dominated by health checkups ? a tedious but essential prerequisite before driving. A chemistry laboratory on wheels, it's the most high-tech spacecraft to land on another planet, so extra care was taken to ensure its tools, including its rock-zapping laser and robotic arm, worked.

Once it got the green light, it trundled to a waypoint that's home to three unique types of terrain to perform science experiments. Every time Curiosity roves, it leaves Morse code tracks in the soil, providing a visual signal between drives. The dots and dashes spell out JPL, short for Jet Propulsion Lab, which built the rover.

Postcards from Mars
So far, its odometer has logged less than a mile. Despite the slow going, scientists have been smitten with the postcards it beamed home, including a stylish self-portrait and tantalizing glimpses of Mount Sharp.

Huge expectations weigh on the mission with NASA balancing the need to feed the public's appetite while pursuing discoveries at its own pace. Last month, the space agency quashed Internet speculation that Curiosity had detected complex carbon compounds in a pinch of Martian soil by issuing a statement ahead of a science meeting where the team was due to present the latest findings.

American University space policy professor Howard McCurdy said Curiosity is currently in a transition, caught between the landing that went viral and the scientific payoff that's expected at Mount Sharp.

"It is interesting, but slow," he said in an email. "I expect public interest will rise as the rover gets closer to its destination."

Curiosity's prime mission lasts two years, but NASA expects the plutonium-powered rover to live far longer. A priority for its human handlers is to learn to operate it more efficiently so that it becomes second nature. Before heading to Mount Sharp, engineers plan a software update to Curiosity's computers to fix remaining bugs.

"We'll need to be pretty careful," project manager Richard Cook said of the upcoming drive. "We may find terrain that we're not comfortable driving in, and we'll have to spend time driving around stuff."

Case of the mysterious wedding photos solved

The owner of a USB key containing mystery wedding photos from 2009 has been found.

Carole Mann, who found the flash drive in a purse she picked up a Burlington church rummage sale, said she was contacted by the mother of the bride this morning who said the storage device belonged to her. The mother had donated a tan, Roots handbag to the Oct. 26 sale, Mann said.

?I?m very happy that we can give that to the owner,? Mann said about the USB key.

Mann heard from many concerned callers who hoped to help identify the flash drive?s owner.

It turns out Mann already knew one of the callers.

?A friend of my daughter?s called and said that she was at the wedding, and it turns out her parents were there,? Mann said.

Mann also heard from a mother of one of the bridal party members as well as a photographer who suggested Mann try to track down the photos through a photographer?s association.

?It?s a small world, isn?t it?? Mann said.

Record set in solar cell efficiency - with light of a thousand suns

11 hrs.

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy have created a solar cell that can convert 44 percent of sunlight hitting it into electrical energy, setting a new record for solar cell?efficiency. But it was only achieved by multiplying the power of the sun by nearly 1,000.

The ongoing research is being done at the III-V Multijunction Photovoltaics group at the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where the previous record of 43.5 percent was set. So while it's not a huge leap in efficiency, it's still a record.

The researchers achieve these high efficiencies by stacking multiple "junctions" into a single solar cell, each of which absorbs light at a slightly different wavelength. The "III-IV" in the name refers to the fact that the elements used?come from the third and fifth columns of the periodic table.

A new material with many desirable properties was?discovered by accident (gallium arsenide diluted with nitrogen), but proved extremely difficult to manufacture. Researchers needed to use a technique called molecular beam epitaxy to minimize impurities in the material ? but no one in the world could do it.

Solar Junction, a company started by researchers from Stanford University, decided to take up the challenge. With a few million dollars in funding, Solar Junction and NREL managed to make the new process work. The result was the "SJ3" cell, which has been breaking records ever since.

The catch is that it's not like a traditional solar cell, which simply receives sunlight on its surface and creates a modest charge from the photons. The SJ3 cell requires the power of the sun to be multiplied by special lenses, creating a beam of light hundreds of times brighter than ordinary sunlight.

In this kind of system, the power is measured in "suns": A beam 10?times brighter than the sun would be described simply as 10 suns. And?the previous efficiency record was set by a lens system that created 415 suns. The latest record was set using 947 suns.

Naturally, one may wonder if such a design is practical ? after all, how often does the sun shine a thousand times brighter than normal? But the lenses actually take normal sunlight that might have hit in a diffuse way on normal cells and concentrate it onto the more efficient SJ3 cell. So in the end it's just using the same area of sunlight in a different way.

The NREL emphasized in the report describing the record that the SJ3 design can easily replace solar systems used in satellites and other space-bound machines ? but it's lighter and more efficient, reducing rocket load and allowing for more onboard electronics.

What's next? Tweaking the design to include a germanium layer used previously could raise efficiency as high as 50 percent ? definitely?a major landmark in solar power, if researchers?can achieve it, although applying it to everyday power needs is another project?altogether.

Information on other research being done by the NREL, including other forms of solar cells and systems, can be found at their webpage. More technical details about the SJ3 cell are in?the NREL article describing the record.
