The two spent a couple of hours walking the pathways that run along the top of the cliffs, each taking dozens of photos?while looking for the ideal?vantage point.

"The Maine coast is always beautiful but having a storm off the coast churning up waves adds some flavor and gives you the opportunity to capture that one moment out of time ... in this case wind-driven waves breaking 30 to 40 feet high along the rocky coast," Jordan told TODAY.com.

He used Photoshop to convert the image to black and white to better capture the dramatic tones, and added some vignetting. The photo won last week's gallery.

A person who certainly commands a singular depth of knowledge regarding government benefits programs, need-based giving, disability, supplemental assistance and related matters felt compelled recently to weigh in on what are commonly lumped together as "social insurance" programs.

Namely, those are Social Security retirement benefits, Social Security Disability payments, workers' compensation and Medicare.

The fundamental point made by Alicia Munnell, who directs the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, is this: The government pays out, yes, but far too many people -- especially those demanding program cuts and curtailed entitlements -- simply don't get the crucial distinction between social insurance and means-tested benefits.

The latter type of assistance, indeed, can be construed as a handout, although that is probably a term reserved for the calloused. Many proponents of helping those who are simply less fortunate -- the sick and aged, the blind, children in poverty or with a severe illness or disease -- prefer to think of it as compassion or simple decency.

Social insurance, though, is entirely remote from notions of a government granting aid or bestowing unearned largesse.

Munnell's stance: We earned it, so certain people need to stop thinking of it in terms of "from the government" or "the government writing the check."

That is true, but consider: Social Security retirees contributed solidly and consistently for their worker's insurance for their entire working lives. Workers also contribute for Social Security Disability Insurance. And although workers' comp premiums are usually paid completely by the employer, many economists commonly view the outlay as more accurately reflecting what is really part of an employee's compensation. In other words, unemployment insurance and workers' compensation are really just a component of worker benefits that are not paid in wages.

And Medicare, too, is partially paid through worker contributions.

So, don't call it welfare, says Munnell. Through social insurance, workers compel themselves to prepare for the future. Those government checks are earned and are "the payoff of a lifetime of premiums."

Dick Cheney recovering after heart transplant

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is recovering Saturday following a heart transplant from an anonymous donor. NBC's Jamie Gangel reports.

Updated at 8:23 p.m. ET: Former Vice President Dick Cheney was recovering Saturday at a Virginia hospital after?receiving a heart transplant, his office said.

Cheney was in the Intensive Care Unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, his office said.

Cheney, 71, who served as vice president in the George W. Bush administration, has had a long history of heart trouble and has been on the cardiac transplant list for more than 20 months.

"Although the former Vice President and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift," aide Kara Ahern said in a written statement that was authenticated by several close associates of the former vice president.

More than 3,100 Americans currently are on the national waiting list for a heart transplant. Just over 2,300 heart transplants were performed last year, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. And 330 people died while waiting.

According to UNOS, 332 people over age 65 received a heart transplant last year. The majority of transplants occur in 50- to 64-year-olds.

The odds of survival are good. More than 70 percent of heart transplant recipients live at least five years, although survival is a bit lower for people over age 65.

NBC's Robert Bazell explains the process of receiving a heart transplant amid news that Former Vice President Dick Cheney has received a new heart.

Cheney suffered a heart attack in 2010, his fifth since the age of 37.?That year, he had surgery to have a small pump installed to help his heart keep working. It was one of the few steps left, short of a transplant, to stay alive in the face of what he acknowledged was "increasing congestive heart failure."

The pump, called a left ventricular assist device, is mainly used for short periods to buy time for potential transplant candidates awaiting a donor organ. The fact that doctors resorted to it illustrated the perilous condition he was in.

"I've gotten used to the various contraptions that are always with me, and I'm working and traveling, I've hunted a time or two, and I have some fishing planned,"?Cheney wrote in his memoir released last year.

In July 2007, he had had a minor surgical procedure to replace a device that monitored his heartbeat. Nearly 20 years earlier, in 1988, Cheney had had quadruple bypass surgery, and had two artery-clearing angioplasties and the operation to implant the device.

In 2005, Cheney had six hours of surgery on his legs to repair a kind of aneurysm, and in March 2007, doctors discovered deep venous thrombosis in his left lower leg. An ultrasound a month later showed the clot was getting smaller.

In January 2011, Cheney said he was getting by on a battery-powered heart pump, which made it "awkward to walk around." He also said he hasn't made a decision yet on a transplant, but that "the technology is getting better and better."

Cheney said then that he'd "have to make a decision at some point whether I want to go for a transplant."

Like 5 million other Americans, Cheney had congestive heart failure, meaning his heart had become too weakened to pump properly. That can happen for a variety of reasons, but Cheney's was due to cumulative damage from five heart attacks that he had suffered since age 37.

Heart failure kills 57,000 Americans a year and contributes to many more deaths.

Cheney served as Bush's vice president for eight years, from 2001 until 2009. Cheney was a lightning rod for criticism during Bush's presidency, accused by opponents of often advocating a belligerent U.S. stance in world affairs during wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Afghan shooting suspect called to duty repeatedly

TACOMA, Washington (Reuters) - Robert Bales built a life around a call to arms. A call that emanated from the ashes of the World Trade Center in New York and took him to the mayhem of faraway Iraq and Afghanistan. A call he may have heard one time too many.

The 38-year-old U.S. Army staff sergeant suspected of gunning down 16 Afghan civilians, including nine children, had struggled to make financial ends meet and was disappointed at being sent back into a war zone for a fourth time rather than an easier posting in Germany or Hawaii.

Bales was a high school football star from Ohio who enlisted in the Army after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States. He married Karilyn Primeau in 2005 and soon they moved into a four-bedroom house near a clear Seattle lake. The couple had two children, but Bales was absent for three tours in Iraq, where he was commended for valor. His wife, a public relations executive, blogged enthusiastically about their life.

Today, his family has the lake house on the market for less than they paid for it and a second home, with a mortgage larger than its market value, has been abandoned for two years, a red notice from the city warning it is uninhabitable.

Bales was denied a longed-for promotion to Sergeant First Class in March 2011. Then his family missed out on the adventure they felt they deserved - a posting in Europe or Hawaii - when Sergeant Bales was sent to a fourth tour abroad, in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, he was celebrated and proud of the heroism of U.S. troops. "We ended up helping the people that three or four hours ago were trying to kill us," he said in a 2009 Army publication describing the rescue of a downed helicopter that turned into a pitched battle, after which victorious U.S. troops gave aid to enemy casualties.

"That's the real difference between being an American as opposed to being a bad guy," he said.

But in Afghanistan something apparently went very wrong. Authorities believe he left a small camp of U.S. soldiers in the middle of the night Sunday, taking his rifle with him and massacring 16 civilians, mostly children, in two villages near Kandahar.

"Please keep (Staff Sergeant) Robert Bales in your prayers. I know his alleged crime is terrible, but he is not a terrible person. He's one of the best guys I've ever served with," Chris Alexander, an Army Captain who served in Iraq with Bales, said on his Facebook page shortly after Bales was identified as the shooting suspect.

MIDWEST TO MIDDLE EAST

Bales grew up in Ohio in the Cincinnati suburb of Norwood. A football player, he made the All-Division II team as a lineman in 1990, according the Cincinnati Post.

Bales got a two-year associates degree, the Army says. He moved to Florida, where he and his brother were directors at a company called Spartina Investments Inc, state records show.

His life changed course when Manhattan's twin towers fell and the Pentagon was struck in the September 2001. Bales joined the army about two months later and was based at the Tacoma, Washington-area Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Though he won multiple decorations during his Iraq tours, including the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the soldier had some brushes with the law back home.

In 2002, he was charged with criminal assault, but the court deferred the charge for six months after Bales completed 20 hours of anger management counseling and stayed out of trouble for six months, the Tacoma News-Tribune reported. The charge was dismissed in February 2003, court records show.

Later that year he shipped out to Iraq for the first time.

The News-Tribune also said Bales was cited for a misdemeanor in 2008 after police reported a man left the scene of a single car rollover. Bales later told police he had fallen asleep behind the wheel, the paper said. He received a deferred 12-month sentence and paid a $250 fine, it reported.

FAMILY TIES

The young soldier met his future wife, Karilyn Primeau, through an online dating service, his lawyer has said, and the Web is dabbed with their history, although access has been restricted to some personal sites.

An Amazon.com wish list for Kari Primeau, assembled in 2003 through the year of their marriage in 2005, has computer design manuals, books on cooking, courtship and pregnancy, and music from Dolly Parton to the synthetic pop of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The new Mrs. Bales blogged prolifically, including a "Babybales" tale of her pregnancy and childraising seen by Reuters.

"Yesterday as I was driving down the road, after dropping Bob off to leave for Iraq, I thought I felt the baby move for the first time," she wrote in 2006.

Years later, in a blog cited by The New York Times, she described the frustration of Bales being passed over for promotion and her response: a wish list of postings, starting with "Germany (best adventure opportunity!), Italy (2nd best adventure opp)" and "Hawaii (nuff said)."

By this point, Bales had spent more than three years at war in three tours in Iraq, losing part of his foot and suffering a head injury in two separate incidents. His lawyer, Seattle attorney John Henry Browne - who made his name defending serial killer Ted Bundy - said the family had been told he was done with fighting. But last December he was sent to Afghanistan.

"He and his family were told that his tours in the Middle East were over," Browne said. "Literally overnight that changed. So I think it would be fair to say that he and the family were not happy that he was going back."

More than a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan has turned multiple deployments into a way of life for many soldiers. Some veterans advocates say the strain is too much, but the Army says it screens troops physically and mentally before sending them back in harm's way.

The sergeant moved out to a small Afghan base with about 20 other troops early this year. Just over a week ago, he watched an explosion blow off one soldier's leg, his lawyer said. Early last Sunday, he gathered his rifle, moved out into the night, and began shooting, killing nine children among 16 dead, authorities believe. Charges are expected in the next few weeks.

Bales' wife and two children are being sheltered by the Army at Lewis-McChord. Bales sits in solitary confinement Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Browne said he did not know whether alcohol was a factor, as has been reported, and told Reuters that post-traumatic stress disorder was likely to be part of the defense. Any suggestion of problems in the marriage was "nonsense," he added.

MONEY WORRIES

The couple's finances, though, gave cause for worry. Their large house near Lake Tapps is up for sale at $51,000 less than they paid for it in 2005, offering it for $229,000, Zillow showed. "Short Sale" announced a realty web site.

A second home in the city of Auburn, about 10 miles to the north of their Lake Tapps home, was purchased by Karilyn Bales, then Karilyn Primeau, in 1999 for $99,500 and was remortgaged for $178,500 in 2006. That is the house that neighbors say has been empty for two years and is posted "Do not occupy."

Edith Bouvette, 52, who knew the couple when they first lived there together, said she was shocked about Robert Bales.

"What I really remember is him in his uniform, his pants tucked inside of his boots," Bouvette said. "He was crisp, clean. Military -- and very polite military. When you talked to him it was 'Yes, Ma'am' - just a really, really nice guy, and it's just a terrible shame.

"I blame part of this on the military. They never should have sent him back for that fourth tour."

But investors including Colony Capital, Ron Tutor and the investment arm of Qatar had already withdrawn the majority of their equity in a refinancing last year that added more than $500 million in debt. New distribution deals are expected to bring in $325 million in revenue over time.

Last year, Miramax released three movies that came with the purchase from Disney, including "The Debt," starring Helen Mirren and Jessica Chastain.

The executive change suggests a ramp-up to become a full-fledged studio, a sale, or more of the same just under new leadership.

Lang said he will remain with Miramax as a consultant until a successor is found.

"The value of the Miramax film library and its iconic underlying brand is clear and the future is bright," Richard Nanula, chairman of Miramax and a principal at Colony Capital, said in a statement.

Apple to add 3,600 jobs at new $304M Texas campus

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Apple Inc. is investing $304 million in a new campus and more than doubling its workforce in the Texas capital, boosted by a $21 million incentive from a state fund designed to attract high-tech companies, Gov. Rick Perry said Friday.

The investment from the Texas Enterprise Fund comes in exchange for a promise that Apple will add more than 3,600 employees at its new facility in Austin over the next decade, including customer support, sales and accounting staff, Perry said.

"Investments like this further Texas' potential to become the nation's next high-tech hub," the governor said in a statement.

Already the world's most valuable company, Apple's market capitalization topped $500 billion this month and remains above that mark - rarefied air that only a few firms, including rival Microsoft and Exxon Mobil Corp, have ever exceeded.

"Our operations in Austin have grown dramatically over the past decade, from less than 1,000 employees in 2004 to more than 3,500 today," said Steve Dowling, a spokesman for the Cupertino, Calif., company.

Perry's office said it only measures the fund's cumulative results - not year by year or contract by contract, since the terms of individual deals change as they are renegotiated. Under that measure, grant recipients promised to create 23,410 jobs by the end of 2010 and exceeded expectations by delivering 33,400.
